BIS Registration

BIS COMPULSARY REGISTRATION SCHEME

The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), introduced by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 2012, is fundamentally a self-declaration of conformity framework designed to safeguard Indian consumers from substandard and inferior-quality products. This scheme primarily targets Electronic and Information Technology (IT) products, ensuring they meet specified safety and quality standards before entering the Indian market. Under the CRS, manufacturers—both domestic and foreign—are required to test their products against applicable Indian Standards and declare compliance, thereby fostering trust in the marketplace and protecting consumer interests. Originally launched to address growing concerns over the influx of low-quality electronics and IT goods, the CRS has evolved significantly since its inception. In recent years, BIS has undertaken a comprehensive re-engineering of the scheme to streamline its processes and enhance accessibility. A key outcome of this overhaul is the introduction of the "Smart Registration" initiative, a digital platform aimed at simplifying compliance for manufacturers. This modernized approach reduces procedural complexities, accelerates registration timelines, and offers greater ease of operation, benefiting both Indian and international producers. By leveraging technology, Smart Registration reflects BIS's commitment to aligning the CRS with contemporary industry needs while maintaining its core objective of ensuring product safety and reliability for Indian consumers.
